// the living wing.

There is a big inspiration to be found in wing design; it's about the smooth efficiency and constant minute trim of a bird in flight. Beyond all the inspiring ideas, Deverne developed a range that guarantees race winning performance and sizes that have been going faster and faster.

The OverDrive is optimised for reaching performance where speed is not compromised for a user friendly feel for everyday blasting.
The OverDrive promotes innovative rig ergonomics which have resulted in a sail that is faster for many sailors than a traditional race sail due to the ease of use. A narrower luff sleeve with the neoprene closure discourages water from entering the luff kepping the sail light for easier waterstarting and uphauling and the snap on roller cams make rigging simple.
Developing this sail to perform on lower carbon content masts and avoiding fragile components such as carbon tube battens has increased the durability whilst decreasing the cost of ownership.
Formula Experience
Lower Aspect Ratios resulting in -
Reducing down force in larger sizes for a lighter feeling and superior speed.
Decreasing batten spread for better foil stability and control.
Bringing the power down closer to the rider for more control.
Larger Dropped Clew allows for better lower leech flex and twist and more rigidity from aluminium booms.
Removal of the Bottom Cam improves rotation, ease of rigging and user friendly performance.
Additional Cam above the boom holds a deeper draft which encourages a more upright comfortable stance, increases drive through lulls and promotes stability higher in the sail.
Neoprene Boom Fairing increases aerodynamics and helps to limit water entering the luff for easier uphauling and waterstarting.
Stabilizer Panel Technology designed to hold the 3D shaping in this crtical area, reducing the vertical stretch of the sail and producing aa more stable foil shape when the sail is under load.
The new 9.7 and 11.0 are designed to be competitive in Formula Experience and both are compatible with the 250-270 Alu race boom and the Blue Line 530 for tuned race performance at a practical cost. This will utlimately encourage more people to participate in this successful class of racing.
Integrated Looped Outhaul for ease of rigging with or without an adjustable outhaul system.

Skeletal Structure
The bones of the sail, the mast, the battens and the cams, now create more structural rigidity increasing foil stability.
XL Cam
Further increasing the foil stability at the leading edge of the sail required the designers think about 3 dimensional flight. The XL Cam creates a new foil entry profile which the whole sleeve philosophy is built around. It encourages smooth rotation and spreads the higher skin tension out over a larger surface area increasing the stability on the mast and reducing any cam wear.
Reflex Batten Tensioner
In the past, twist has always been confined to the upper leech; this dated ideology has been taken apart and rebuilt for a more active exhaust. By studying the way the trim feathers adjust the trailing edge of a bird wing, Severne have now increased reflex further down the leech. This has been achieved using the new Reflex batten tensioning system which isolates where the sail demands depth and encourages a unique twist and flex pattern where the sail breathes as one cohesive foil in a variety of conditions. This idea is unique in concept and is undergoing patent processing.
Bjoern Dunkerbeck (12 time World Champion)
"Keep everything as still and stable as possible, allow the rig to breathe and fine tune constantly. The fundamental appears basic, but the performance demand this places on the rig is infinite.
When we set out to develop the REFLEX Race program, every single size has been redesigned from the ground up, to deliver unbeatable performance."
Steve Allen > "There is a big inspiration to be found in wing design; it's about the smooth efficiency and constant minute trim of a bird in flight. Beyond all the inspiring ideas, we developed a range that guarantees race winning performance and sizes that have been going faster and faster."
Ben Severne
"Steve's ongoing fascination with the whole bird wing really reopened the debate on some of the key aspects of design. Of course it's not new to be looking at nature or birds, but design and technology are evolving constantly. This concept, along with Bjorn's unique views on straight line speed, evolved my view of the sailor and the rig as a single biomechanical organism. This evolved into the Living Wing ideology.
